Four of Chris’ paintings were recently published in a book entitled Psychescapes, an exploration of contemporary work that explores the human psyche. It was published by a New York gallery owned by Liz Afif.
Chris’ work comes from dreams, questions, and the unknown. Chris feels that his work is best summed up by this title of a Paul Gauguin painting, “Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?”

A collection of oil paintings by Marla McNamara will be on exhibit at Cafe Cubano during the month of August.

During the 50’s and 60’s Marla spent most of her childhood in the art museums and galleries of Chicago, Detroit, and New York. The Art Institute of Chicago was the most frequented, as her parents were students, and her father worked as a guard there. The art professors and fellow students, at the Art Institute, were a big part of Marla’s life. Some were artists who had fled from Eastern Europe to escape persecution or death. These people, and their stories, had a profound influence on Marla’s life.

Although her parents are primarily abstract artists, Marla was awed by the works of the High Renaissance Artists, Impressionist, and Surrealists, and spent her time visiting their paintings in the museums.

In Detroit, Marla received her first art award at the age of 11. In 1964 her father became an art professor at West Virginia State College where she started taking art classes at the age of 15. At 16, she began studying figure drawing at the Art Institute of Chicago, and when she was 18, she won a scholarship to the Provincetown Art Workshop in Massachusetts. Marla studied at Concord College, and Morris Harvey College in West Virginia, earning a BA in fine arts in 1973. She later studied illustration and other graphic arts at Northern Virginia Community College. She now lives in Charlottesville Virginia and is currently offering portraits by commission.
